About British Gas Business
British Gas Business is the commercial energy arm of Centrica plc, one of the UK’s largest FTSE 100 energy companies, supplying gas and electricity to over 400,000 businesses across the UK. The British Gas name has been synonymous with UK energy since the privatisation of British Gas plc in 1986, with Centrica formed following its demerger in 1997. The business energy division operates separately from the domestic brand, serving SMEs and larger enterprises through distinct product tiers.
As of mid-2025, British Gas holds the second-largest share of the UK electricity market at 20.9% and remains the single largest gas supplier with 27.2% market share — a position built on decades of infrastructure investment and brand recognition. For businesses, British Gas operates across three distinct tiers: British Gas Lite (a digital-only, self-service product for smaller SMEs), British Gas Business (a fully serviced contract model for established businesses), and an Enterprise offering for large, multi-site or high-consumption organisations.
The company also operates as Scottish Gas in Scotland, covering the same product range under a regional brand. British Gas Business has received Uswitch’s Best Overall Improvement award for consecutive years in 2024 and 2025, reflecting measurable service enhancements, though complaint volumes and customer satisfaction scores still lag behind leading challengers.

The British Gas Business Checklist
Security
Are their prices fully fixed?
Partially. British Gas Business fixes commodity costs — unit rates and standing charges — for the duration of your contract as confirmed in your supply agreement. However, third-party pass-through costs are excluded from price protection and may vary throughout the contract term.
Variable elements include:
- Climate Change Levy (CCL)
- Network and transportation charges (DUoS/TNUoS)
- Industry levies (FIT, RO, CFD for electricity)
- Capacity market charges
These costs can represent 42–52% of a typical electricity bill, according to market analysis from late 2025. Whilst British Gas cannot control these charges (they are set by network operators and government), their variability limits the genuine price certainty of a “fixed” contract. This is industry-standard practice but should be factored into budget planning.
| Charge Type | Status |
|---|---|
| Commodity costs | ✓ Included, Fixed |
| Transportation (DUoS/TNUoS) | ✗ Excluded, Variable (pass-through) |
| Metering | ✗ Excluded, Variable (pass-through) |
| FIT/RO/CFD | ✗ Excluded, Variable (pass-through) |
| VAT | Excluded (standard) |
| CCL (Climate Change Levy) | Excluded (pass-through) |
Back-billing policy
British Gas Business is an Energy UK member, meaning they adhere to the Back Billing Principle limiting retrospective billing to 12 months for meter reading corrections or estimated billing adjustments. This provides important protection against unexpected historical charges — particularly relevant given British Gas Lite’s documented instances of delayed billing in Trustpilot reviews.
Credit requirements
British Gas Business performs credit checks for all new business applicants. As businesses consume energy before paying for it, the supplier treats supply as an extension of short-term credit. The assessment considers payment history, outstanding debts, previous defaults, and how long the business has been trading.
If the credit assessment raises concerns, British Gas may:
- Refuse the application or increase quoted prices
- Require a security deposit
- Mandate a prepayment or pay-as-you-go meter
- Adjust billing frequency or payment terms
- Request additional financial guarantees or a personal guarantee
Newly incorporated businesses and those with limited trading history should prepare documentation in advance. The credit check process is more rigorous for larger consumption accounts.
Transparency
What is the termination process?
For non-microbusinesses: Written notice is required before your contract end date. The exact notice period is specified in your Contract Confirmation Letter — typically 30 days but can vary. Termination can be submitted by phone (0333 202 9766), via your online account portal, or in writing.
For microbusinesses (fewer than 10 employees, turnover under £1.7m, consuming under 100,000 kWh electricity annually): No advance notice is required to end fixed-term contracts under the 2021 Ofgem microbusiness protections. Exception: evergreen or rollover tariffs require 30 days’ notice.
Important note: British Gas’s standard business terms state that business energy contracts cannot be cancelled once agreed. Businesses should ensure they are comfortable with contract terms before signing, as early exit is typically not straightforward.
What happens at contract end?
British Gas Business sends renewal reminder notices ahead of contract expiry. If you do not renew or switch by the end date, you will be placed on Out-of-Contract rates, which are significantly higher than fixed-term tariffs and can change with 30 days’ notice.
Unlike some suppliers offering extended rollover periods, British Gas moves non-renewing customers directly to Out-of-Contract variable rates. Given that Out-of-Contract rates can be 30–70% higher than fixed tariffs, setting calendar reminders for 90 days before expiry is strongly advisable.
Is there a rollover period?
No automatic rollover into a new fixed term. Customers who do not renew or switch are placed on Out-of-Contract variable rates until a new agreement is reached. This provides flexibility but at the cost of substantially higher unit rates.
What about early exit fees?
Early termination fees apply and are specified in your Contract Confirmation Letter. British Gas Business’s terms state that business contracts cannot be cancelled once agreed — early exit scenarios should be discussed directly with British Gas before signing. For comparison, domestic British Gas contracts carry a £75 per fuel exit fee, but business contract terms differ.

Payment options
- Monthly Direct Debit (preferred and standard)
- Quarterly billing (available for some contract types)
- BACS bank transfer
- Online card payments via account portal
British Gas Lite customers are restricted to Direct Debit only. Alternative payment methods for standard British Gas Business contracts should be confirmed at point of quotation, as terms vary.
Online account management
British Gas Business provides an online portal for account management, including invoice viewing, meter reading submission, usage monitoring, and payment management. The Energy360® DataView tool is available to larger business customers, offering half-hourly smart meter data analysis and consumption pattern reporting.
British Gas Lite customers manage their accounts entirely online — this is the defining characteristic of the Lite product and the reason for its lower pricing. However, the self-service model’s limitations are well documented in customer reviews, particularly when billing disputes or smart meter faults arise.
Customer service standards
British Gas Business offers multi-channel support including a dedicated business helpline (0333 202 9766, 8am–6pm Monday to Friday), live chat (same hours), and online account management. An emergency line operates outside standard hours for supply emergencies.
Service quality varies significantly by product tier. Full British Gas Business customers report reasonable support for routine queries, though complex billing disputes can take time to resolve. British Gas Lite customers — operating in a digital-only model — report considerably more friction, with Trustpilot reviews frequently citing difficulties escalating issues beyond automated webchat. The Lite product’s 1.2/5 Trustpilot score from ~3,900 reviews contrasts sharply with the broader British Gas brand rating.
Which? gave British Gas a 65% customer score in their 2025 supplier assessment — below the 72% market average — and awarded zero points for switching performance, flagging it as an area requiring significant improvement.
In Q1 2025, British Gas reported 1,168 complaints per 100,000 accounts, with over 60% resolved within one working day and 89% within eight weeks — showing measurable improvement year-on-year, though still representing a high absolute complaint volume across the business.
VAT declarations
Businesses using energy for qualifying purposes (residential care homes, hospices, boarding schools) may be eligible for reduced VAT at 5% rather than the standard 20%. British Gas Business can process VAT declarations with appropriate supporting documentation. CCL exemptions are also available for qualifying organisations such as charities — contact the business team with evidence of eligibility.
Services
Smart meters
British Gas Business offers free smart meter installation for business customers. Smart meters are a prerequisite for British Gas Lite contracts and are strongly recommended for full British Gas Business customers accessing the PeakSave for Business demand-shifting programme. Smart meter data feeds the Energy360® DataView analytics platform for larger accounts.
British Gas Lite’s smart meter requirement has been a recurring pain point in reviews — instances of metres not communicating post-installation, leading to estimated billing, are well documented. For accounts where smart metre reliability is critical, this should be discussed with the sales team before contract signing.
PeakSave for Business
British Gas Business operates a PeakSave for Business demand-response scheme, offering eligible SME customers half-price electricity during defined off-peak windows. As of early 2026, the scheme offered half-price electricity between 10am and 3pm on Wednesdays across a six-week promotional period. The scheme is available to customers with working smart metres opted into half-hourly readings and is designed to reward businesses for shifting consumption to periods of lower grid demand or higher renewable generation. Savings of over £160 per event period have been reported by participating businesses.
Note: PeakSave is not available to British Gas Lite or British Gas Plus customers.
New connections
British Gas Business can arrange new gas and electricity connections for new builds or premises requiring upgraded supply capacity. Third-party infrastructure costs apply in addition to supply charges and are coordinated with local network operators.
Multi-utility supply
British Gas Business supplies electricity and gas only. Water supply and telecommunications are not offered. Businesses requiring multi-utility management will need separate providers for water, telecoms, and other services.
EV charging and additional services
British Gas Business, through the wider Centrica group, offers workplace EV charging infrastructure, including site surveys, equipment supply, and installation. The company’s Hive smart technology platform is primarily consumer-focused but has some commercial applications for energy monitoring. Boiler and heating maintenance services are available under British Gas HomeCare-style commercial agreements, with ~7,000 engineers and technicians covering the UK.
Environmental
British Gas Business has made meaningful progress on renewable electricity content, though it sits behind specialist green suppliers and some major challengers in this regard.
Green electricity
British Gas Business supplies 90% zero-carbon electricity as standard on all new contracts signed by March 2026, backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs). This is a significant step forward from the company’s historical fuel mix position and puts it ahead of the UK grid average. However, it falls short of 100% renewable options offered by suppliers such as Octopus Energy, Ecotricity, and Good Energy.
The company is one of the UK’s largest retailers of zero-carbon electricity and is investing in renewable infrastructure through the wider Centrica group.
Carbon-neutral gas
British Gas does not currently offer carbon-neutral gas as a standard product. The company is involved in green gas and hydrogen development projects for the longer term but these are not yet reflected in commercially available SME tariffs.
Standard fuel mix (2025 data):
| Source | British Gas | UK Average |
|---|---|---|
| Renewable | ~52% | 37.9% |
| Nuclear | ~38% | 16.6% |
| Coal | 0% | 2.5% |
| Gas | ~10% | 39.4% |
| Other | ~0% | 3.6% |
Note: The 90% zero-carbon claim on new contracts reflects both renewable and nuclear generation. Specific fuel mix disclosures for British Gas Business should be confirmed at point of contract.
Charity and community
British Gas operates the British Gas Energy Trust, a registered charity providing financial assistance to households and businesses in energy debt — open to customers of any supplier. This is a genuinely distinctive social contribution and is funded independently of British Gas’s commercial operations.
Sector Fit Assessment
| Sector | Suitability | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hospitality | ⭐⭐⭐ Moderate | Standard dual-fuel supply works for hotels, restaurants, and pubs. PeakSave demand-response relevant for businesses with flexible operating patterns. No hospitality-specific account management but brand familiarity can aid internal sign-off. |
| Manufacturing | ⭐⭐ Weak | Limited high-consumption bespoke solutions under the SME products. Pass-through charges unpredictable for large electricity users. Manufacturers with significant consumption should explore Enterprise-tier conversations or specialist industrial brokers. |
| Retail | ⭐⭐⭐ Moderate | Multi-site retail can benefit from consolidated billing and Energy360® data tools on larger accounts. Smart metre integration useful for consumption monitoring across locations. Trustpilot service concerns may give pause for businesses requiring active account support. |
| Education | ⭐⭐⭐ Moderate | VAT and CCL exemption support available for qualifying schools and colleges. British Gas Energy Trust support relevant for community and academy schools managing tight budgets. Larger estates should explore Enterprise-tier or specialist procurement. |
| Healthcare | ⭐⭐⭐ Moderate | Suitable for GP surgeries, dental practices, and care homes. VAT declaration support for residential care particularly relevant. Emergency supply line and UK-wide engineer network (7,000+) provides resilience confidence for healthcare operators. |
| Automotive | ⭐⭐⭐ Moderate | EV charging infrastructure available through Centrica, directly relevant for dealerships transitioning forecourts and customer parking. Standard dual-fuel supply suits garages and bodyshops. PeakSave relevant for sites with daytime flexibility. |
| Professional Services | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good | Competitive fixed rates, 90% zero-carbon electricity, and online portal work well for offices, law firms, accountancies, and consultancies. Brand familiarity helps with internal procurement approval. Service quality on full BGB product is adequate for standard needs. |
| SMEs (General) | ⭐⭐⭐ Moderate | British Gas brand recognition and financial stability are reassuring, but service quality concerns — particularly for Lite customers — and below-average Which? scores mean SMEs should weigh brand familiarity against better-rated challenger alternatives. |

Telnergy’s Take
Our Professional Assessment
British Gas Business occupies a paradoxical position in the UK commercial energy market. The name carries unmatched recognition — built on 200 years of heritage — and the Centrica group’s financial stability is beyond question for a FTSE 100 company. Yet service quality data tells a more complex story, and businesses choosing British Gas should do so with clear eyes about what they are and are not getting.
What we like:
Financial stability and scale: Centrica’s balance sheet provides the kind of supplier security that became acutely relevant during the 2021–22 supplier collapse, when 30+ smaller suppliers failed. Whilst British Gas itself has faced service challenges, its financial robustness means businesses face negligible supplier insolvency risk — a material consideration when signing 2–4 year contracts.
90% zero-carbon electricity as standard: New contracts now include 90% zero-carbon electricity (renewable and nuclear) without a green tariff premium. For businesses with sustainability reporting obligations or ESG commitments, this provides meaningful credentials without additional cost. It is a genuine improvement from British Gas’s historical position and compares well against the 37.9% UK grid average.
PeakSave for Business: The demand-response scheme is a genuinely useful cost management tool for eligible SMEs with smart metres and some flexibility in energy usage patterns. Savings of £160+ per event period represent real money for smaller businesses, and the scheme rewards engagement with grid balancing — a direction of travel in UK energy policy.
Range of product tiers: The Lite/Business/Enterprise structure means British Gas has a product for most business sizes. The digital-only Lite model suits tech-savvy SMEs comfortable with self-service in exchange for lower unit rates; the full BGB product provides human support for businesses that need it.
Nationwide engineer network: With ~7,000 engineers and technicians across the UK, British Gas offers unmatched field service capability. For businesses with boiler maintenance, smart metre installation, or EV charging infrastructure requirements, this national coverage is a practical advantage.
Watch points:
Service quality is inconsistent — especially on Lite: British Gas Lite’s 1.2/5 Trustpilot score from ~3,900 reviews is deeply concerning and represents one of the lowest ratings of any mainstream business supplier. Common themes include billing errors, smart metre communication failures, inability to escalate through webchat-only support, and prolonged resolution times. Businesses choosing Lite for its pricing should be fully aware of what they are trading in terms of service access.
Which? assessment is damaging: A 65% customer score — below the 72% market average — and zero points for switching performance in Which?’s 2025 assessment reflects genuine service gaps. Only OVO Energy and Scottish Power scored worse among major suppliers. For business customers who value independent service validation, this is a significant red flag.
Complaint volumes remain high: British Gas received 596,931 complaints across 2025 — a 20.75% reduction on 2024, which is progress. But 146,341 complaints in Q4 2025 alone represents a structurally high complaint rate for any supplier. Improvement is evident; the current position is not yet strong.
Pass-through cost exposure: Non-commodity costs now represent 42–52% of electricity bills and are rising as grid investment accelerates. British Gas’s “fixed” contracts leave businesses exposed to this material portion of their energy cost — consistent with market practice but worth careful budget planning.
No carbon-neutral gas: For businesses with whole-energy sustainability targets, the absence of a carbon-neutral gas product is a limitation. Specialist green suppliers offer certified offset options that British Gas currently does not match on gas supply.
Bottom line:
British Gas Business remains a credible choice for businesses that prioritise financial stability and brand familiarity, are comfortable with the Centrica group’s service improvement trajectory, and don’t require best-in-class digital service or 100% renewable credentials. For businesses choosing the full British Gas Business product (not Lite), service quality is adequate for most routine needs.
We would not recommend British Gas Lite to businesses for whom any complexity, dispute, or billing query is plausible. The digital-only model’s limitations become acutely apparent when things go wrong, and the Trustpilot evidence is unambiguous.
For SMEs where service quality, green credentials, and switching ease are priorities, there are better-rated alternatives — particularly among the leading challengers. However, for businesses where internal stakeholder familiarity with the British Gas brand aids procurement decisions, or where Centrica’s financial solidity is a specific requirement, British Gas Business delivers a functional if unremarkable service.
We regularly quote British Gas Business alongside other suppliers. Their rates are competitive more often than their service reputation might suggest — but the best outcome depends on matching the right product tier to your business’s risk tolerance and service expectations.
