What Is an MPAN and Why Does It Matter for Your Business?

Your MPAN Is the Unique Identifier for Your Electricity Supply Point. Without It, Your Supplier Can’t Bill You, Switch You, or Process Any Change to Your Account.
Every electricity supply point in Great Britain — every domestic home, every business premises, every industrial facility with a grid connection — has a unique identifier called an MPAN. It stands for Meter Point Administration Number, and it is to your electricity supply what a sort code and account number is to your bank account: the specific reference that makes your supply point uniquely identifiable in the national database.
Understanding what an MPAN is, where to find it, and why it matters for business energy management is a small but practically important piece of energy literacy. It comes up at every contract change, supplier switch, metering query, and billing dispute.
What MPAN Stands For and What It Identifies
MPAN stands for Meter Point Administration Number. It identifies a specific electricity supply point — not a meter (meters can be replaced), not a building address (addresses can change), and not a customer account (customers change). The supply point itself: the physical connection point in the electricity network where your premises receives its supply.
The MPAN is managed through a national database called the Meter Point Administration Service (MPAS), operated separately for each Distribution Network Operator (DNO) region. When you switch electricity supplier, move premises, or change metering arrangements, the MPAN remains constant — it’s the supply point, not the commercial relationship, that the number identifies.
The Structure of an MPAN
A full MPAN has 21 digits, structured in two parts:
The top line (S number): An 8-digit or 10-digit supplementary number that contains profile class information (how your consumption pattern is categorised for settlement purposes), meter timeswitch code (relevant for time-of-use meters), and line loss factor class (used for calculating network losses). The profile class in the top line tells you how your supply is settled — Profile Class 00 means half-hourly metering; Profile Classes 01–08 indicate non-half-hourly settlement with different consumption profiles.
The core MPAN (bottom line): A 13-digit number with the following structure:
- Digits 1–2: Distribution Network Operator code (identifies which DNO serves your premises)
- Digits 3–10: Unique identifier for the supply point within that DNO’s network
- Digits 11–12: Meter point ID
- Digit 13: Check digit (validates the number)
On your electricity bill, the MPAN is typically displayed in a grid format with the top line above the core MPAN. It may be labelled “Supply Number,” “Meter Point Number,” “MPAN,” or “S-Number” depending on the supplier’s bill format.
Where to Find Your MPAN
Your MPAN appears in several places:
- Your electricity bill: Usually on the first page, in the supply point details section. Look for a 13-digit number often displayed in a box or grid format.
- Your energy contract or welcome letter: The MPAN should be stated on any contract document from your current or previous supplier.
- Your electricity meter: The MPAN is sometimes printed on a card or label attached to the meter or the meter housing. Note: this varies — not all meters have the MPAN displayed.
- Via your supplier: If you can’t locate it, call your current electricity supplier with your account number and they can provide it.
If you are moving into new premises and don’t have access to previous bills, a commercial energy broker can look up the MPAN for any premises using industry databases (Electralink) — this is a standard part of the Change of Tenancy process.
Why the MPAN Matters for Business Energy Management
Supplier switching: To arrange a new electricity supply contract with any supplier, you need your MPAN. Without it, the supplier cannot register the contract against the correct supply point or initiate the transfer process. Any reputable energy broker will require your MPAN before beginning a market comparison.
Contract management: Every correspondence with your supplier about billing queries, meter changes, or contract amendments will reference the MPAN as the primary identifier. Having it readily accessible saves time in every energy administration conversation.
Multi-site management: For businesses operating multiple premises, maintaining a record of the MPAN for every site is essential for accurate portfolio management. Different sites may have different suppliers, different contract terms, and different renewal dates — all organised by MPAN.
Metering disputes: If a billing error arises — an estimated read applied to the wrong meter, a settlement issue, or a disputed consumption figure — the resolution process begins with verifying the MPAN. Errors arising from MPAN mismatches (the wrong supply point being billed to the wrong account) are uncommon but do occur, particularly in multi-tenancy buildings.
Profile class and settlement: The profile class contained in the top line of your MPAN determines how your consumption is settled in the wholesale electricity market. Understanding your profile class — particularly whether you are half-hourly settled (Profile Class 00) or non-half-hourly (Profile Classes 01–08) — is relevant to understanding your metering options and contract eligibility.
MPAN vs MPRN: What’s the Difference?
If your business has both electricity and gas supplies, you will have two separate identifiers: the MPAN for electricity and the MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) for gas. They serve the same function — unique identification of the supply point — but operate through different industry databases and different supply chain processes.
For multi-fuel premises, always ensure you have both identifiers on record. Mixing them up — submitting an MPRN where an MPAN is required — is a common source of unnecessary delays in supplier switch and contract processes.
Telnergy and MPAN Management
We record and manage the MPAN (and MPRN) for every supply point in every client’s portfolio. When you work with us, you don’t need to locate or manage these numbers yourself — we maintain the record and use it for every supplier interaction on your behalf.
