About Corona Energy

Corona Energy is one of the UK’s longest-established independent business energy specialists, supplying gas and electricity exclusively to non-domestic customers since 1995. Headquartered in Watford, Hertfordshire, Corona serves approximately 17,000 business customers and manages over 85,000 metres nationwide — a scale that places it firmly in the mid-market between the Big Six and smaller challenger suppliers.

Unlike most household-name energy companies that serve both domestic and commercial markets, Corona Energy has always focused solely on business customers — from microbusinesses and SMEs through to industrial and commercial (I&C) accounts. This B2B-only model shapes the company’s entire service structure: dedicated account managers, commercially oriented billing systems, and a culture built around business energy procurement rather than consumer retail.

Corona is particularly well known in the broker and intermediary community for the quality of its account management and the availability of its SME Fully Fixed product — one of only a handful of mainstream offerings in the UK market that genuinely fixes all charges, including network pass-throughs, for the full contract term.

The company supplies approximately 14% of the UK industrial and commercial gas market, reflecting its strength in the larger-account segment despite its independent, non-Big Six status. With over 200 customer service professionals on its team, Corona maintains a service model that sits closer to a specialist consultancy than a volume retail supplier.

The Corona Energy Checklist

Security

Are their prices fully fixed?

This is where Corona Energy genuinely stands out. Unlike most suppliers — including all of the Big Six — Corona offers two distinct product types with fundamentally different approaches to price fixing:

SME Fully Fixed: Fixes all elements of the contract price, including commodity costs, transportation charges, metering, FIT, and RO (for electricity). This is a market-leading position. When you agree a price with Corona on the Fully Fixed product, that price is guaranteed to remain unchanged for the full contract term, regardless of movements in network charges or industry levies. The only exclusion is CFD (Contracts for Difference), which is charged on top regardless of product, and standard VAT and CCL.

SME Fixed: Fixes commodity (wholesale energy) costs only. Transportation, metering, FIT, and RO charges remain variable and can change throughout the contract term — consistent with standard industry practice.

This two-tier structure requires careful attention at the quoting stage. Both products are described as “fixed” but they deliver materially different levels of price certainty. Always confirm which product underpins a Corona quote before signing.

Charge Type SME Fully Fixed SME Fixed
Commodity costs ✓ Fixed ✓ Fixed
Transportation (DUoS/TNUoS) ✓ Fixed ✗ Variable
Metering ✓ Fixed ✗ Variable
FIT (electricity) ✓ Fixed ✗ Variable
RO (electricity) ✓ Fixed ✗ Variable
CFD (electricity) ✗ Excluded (both products) ✗ Excluded
VAT Excluded (standard) Excluded (standard)
CCL Excluded (standard) Excluded (standard)

Back-billing policy

Corona Energy is an Energy UK member, adhering to the Back Billing Principle limiting retrospective billing to 12 months for meter reading corrections or estimated billing adjustments. This provides important protection against unexpected historical charges — particularly relevant given some Trustpilot reviews referencing billing adjustments following metre changes.

Credit requirements

As a business-only supplier, Corona Energy carries out credit assessments for new customers. Terms offered — including contract length, payment method, and whether a security deposit is required — are determined by the outcome of this assessment. Businesses with strong credit histories are typically offered standard terms with Direct Debit payment.

Transparency

What is the termination process?

For non-microbusinesses: 30 days’ written notice required before your contract end date. Corona Energy contacts customers when they have 60 days remaining on their contract with renewal options, which is a longer lead time than many suppliers and provides good forward planning opportunity.

For microbusinesses (fewer than 10 employees, turnover under £1.7m, consuming under 100,000 kWh electricity annually): No advance notice is required to end fixed-term contracts under the 2021 Ofgem microbusiness protections. Exception: evergreen or rollover tariffs require 30 days’ notice.

Termination submission: Via written notice to Corona Energy. All outstanding balances must be settled before switching supplier.

What happens at contract end?

Corona Energy sends renewal notifications at the 60-day mark before contract expiry — earlier than the 30-day minimum required by Ofgem, giving businesses more time to compare the market and make an informed decision. Businesses that do not renew or switch are placed on Corona’s out-of-contract variable rates, which — as with all suppliers — are significantly higher than fixed-term tariffs and can change at any time.

From October 2024, DUoS and TNUoS fixed charges are passed through separately on out-of-contract rates, adding further cost layers beyond the headline unit rate. Businesses approaching contract end should prioritise timely renewal or switching.

Is there a rollover period?

No automatic rollover into a new fixed term. Businesses not renewing are placed on out-of-contract variable rates until a new agreement is reached or they switch.

What about early exit fees?

Early termination fees apply and are specified in your Contract Confirmation Letter. Corona’s contracts are standard fixed-term agreements — once signed, businesses are committed to the minimum supply period. Corona Energy reserves the right to amend contract terms in specific circumstances, including changes in law, customer failure to fulfil obligations, or gas customers failing to use their stated consumption.

Convenience

Payment options

  • Monthly Direct Debit (standard for all accounts)

Corona Energy bills are paid by Direct Debit as standard across all tariff types. Businesses requiring alternative payment arrangements should raise this at the quotation stage.

Online account management

Corona Energy provides an online account portal offering bill history, usage insights, and contract management tools with straightforward navigation. Customers can access consumption data and reporting, which is particularly useful for businesses with energy management or sustainability reporting requirements. Webchat support is available through the online platform.

The portal is functional rather than feature-rich — appropriate for a supplier whose value proposition centres on account management relationships rather than self-service technology. Businesses wanting a highly sophisticated digital experience comparable to Octopus Energy’s platform may find it less polished.

Customer service standards

Corona Energy’s service model is built around dedicated account managers rather than generic call centre support. Business customers are assigned named account contacts for renewals, billing queries, and ongoing support. This relationship-led approach distinguishes Corona from volume retail suppliers and is consistently praised in Trustpilot reviews — with reviewers frequently naming individual account managers who delivered efficient, knowledgeable assistance.

Webchat is available as an additional contact channel. Standard customer service hours apply; 24/7 support is available for I&C accounts via a dedicated corporate team.

Trustpilot reviews from verified business customers score Corona at 4.4–4.5/5. Positive themes include smooth onboarding, responsive named contacts, and clear billing on fixed contracts. Negative themes — present in a minority of reviews — include delays resolving billing adjustments following metre changes, and occasional slow escalation response times during peak periods. These are not unusual for an independent specialist supplier and the overall satisfaction level is significantly above the industry average.

VAT declarations

Businesses eligible for reduced VAT rates — including charities and residential care facilities — can submit declarations to Corona Energy with supporting documentation. CCL exemption for qualifying organisations is also available.

Services

Smart metres

Corona Energy supports both AMR (Automated Meter Reading) metres and SMETS2 smart metres. AMR metres — which provide half-hourly data via one-way communication — are recommended for larger enterprise accounts where the scale of data reduces risk of reporting errors. Smart metres, with two-way communication, are better suited to SMEs, enabling greater usage visibility and control. Corona’s team can advise on the appropriate metre type for a given account profile.

I&C and large account services

Corona’s corporate team serves large business accounts and multi-site portfolios with 24/7 availability. For businesses with complex energy estates, multi-site supply, or high consumption profiles, Corona’s I&C expertise — backed by a 14% share of the UK industrial and commercial gas market — is a material advantage. The company’s long independent history in this segment means it understands the procurement requirements and risk management priorities of larger energy users.

Public sector supply

Corona Energy has a specialist public sector team and established relationships with public sector organisations. The company understands the procurement frameworks, contract requirements, and stakeholder reporting obligations specific to public sector energy supply — making it a credible option for local authorities, NHS trusts, and educational institutions operating under procurement frameworks.

New connections

Corona Energy can assist with new gas and electricity connections coordinated through local network operators.

Multi-utility supply

Corona Energy supplies electricity and gas only. Water and telecommunications are not offered.

Environmental

Corona Energy offers businesses a genuine choice of electricity supply mix, with three distinct options reflecting different sustainability and cost priorities.

ECOrona — 100% renewable electricity

ECOrona is Corona’s renewable electricity product, delivering 100% renewable electricity with zero CO₂ emissions and zero radioactive waste, backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs). This is the appropriate product for businesses with ESG reporting requirements, supply chain sustainability obligations, or net zero commitments that require verified renewable electricity supply.

ECOrona carries a price premium over the standard supply options — the exact differential depends on consumption, location, and market conditions at the time of quoting.

Standard supply options

Corona offers two standard electricity products alongside ECOrona:

Corona Average: A balanced fuel mix with CO₂ emissions of approximately 363g/kWh, broadly in line with the UK grid average. Suitable for businesses focused on cost rather than environmental credentials.

Standard Brown: Conventional generation supply with approximately 474g/kWh CO₂ emissions — the highest-carbon option, typically carrying the lowest unit rate. Appropriate only where cost is the sole procurement criterion.

Fuel mix disclosure (April 2024 – March 2025):

Product CO₂ Emissions Radioactive Waste Renewable Content
ECOrona 0g/kWh 0g/kWh 100%
Corona Average 363g/kWh 0.00021g/kWh Balanced mix
Standard Brown 474g/kWh 0g/kWh Minimal

This three-tier transparency is more granular than most suppliers provide and enables businesses to make genuinely informed choices about the environmental profile of their supply.

Gas sustainability

Corona Energy does not currently offer a carbon-neutral or green gas product. Gas supply is standard natural gas. Businesses requiring whole-energy sustainability coverage for both electricity and gas should explore specialist green suppliers or the SSE Green Gas upgrade alongside ECOrona for electricity.

Telnergy’s Take

Our Professional Assessment

Corona Energy occupies a distinctive and underappreciated position in the UK business energy market. It is not a household name — it does not advertise on television or appear prominently in consumer comparison engines — but among energy brokers, procurement professionals, and experienced business energy buyers, its reputation is consistently strong.

What we like:

SME Fully Fixed is genuinely rare: The ability to fix not just commodity costs but all non-commodity pass-through charges — network, metering, FIT, and RO — for the full contract term is a product feature that distinguishes Corona from almost every mainstream competitor. At a time when non-commodity costs represent 40–50% of a typical electricity bill and are rising, this is a meaningful proposition for businesses that genuinely need budget certainty rather than the partial certainty of a standard fixed-rate deal.

B2B-only focus translates into a better service model: Every element of Corona’s operations is designed around business customers. There is no domestic customer base creating competing service demands, no consumer-oriented digital platform prioritised over commercial account management, and no tension between the needs of a home energy customer and a hospitality business. This single focus shows in the quality of account manager relationships and the commercial literacy of the customer service team.

Named account management is the real differentiator: In a market where most suppliers route business customers through generic call centres, Corona’s model of assigned named account managers represents a genuinely different service experience. Trustpilot reviews repeatedly reference individual account managers by name — a pattern that indicates consistent, relationship-led service rather than transactional processing.

14% I&C gas market share signals credibility: This figure reflects decades of sustained performance in the competitive industrial and commercial segment. Businesses with high gas consumption — manufacturers, large hospitality groups, healthcare providers — are well served by a supplier with this level of experience in complex, high-volume accounts.

60-day renewal notification: Proactively contacting customers 60 days before contract expiry — twice the Ofgem minimum — gives businesses a genuine window to compare the market and make an informed renewal decision. This transparency contrasts with suppliers whose renewal process is deliberately designed to minimise switching.

Watch points:

Not widely available through direct channels: Corona Energy does not publish its fixed tariff rates online and is primarily accessed through energy brokers and intermediaries. Businesses that prefer to manage procurement entirely independently may find the quoting process less straightforward than with digital-first suppliers.

Digital platform is functional, not leading edge: The online account portal meets business account management needs without matching the sophistication of platforms like Octopus Energy’s Kraken system. Businesses wanting real-time consumption dashboards, app-based management, or advanced analytics may find Corona’s digital offering limited.

Green gas not available: ECOrona covers electricity only. Businesses with whole-energy sustainability targets requiring certified green gas alongside renewable electricity will need to look elsewhere for a combined solution.

CFD excluded from both products: CFD charges are excluded from all Corona contracts regardless of product type — including the SME Fully Fixed. Businesses should factor this into their total cost modelling as CFD represents a component of the electricity bill that Corona cannot fix.

Bottom line:

Corona Energy is one of our most reliable recommendations for businesses prioritising genuine price certainty, quality account management, and I&C expertise. The SME Fully Fixed product is among the most protective pricing structures available in the UK SME market, and the named account manager model delivers a service experience that most large suppliers cannot match.

The trade-off is lower brand visibility, a less sophisticated digital platform, and no green gas option. For businesses where these factors are secondary to pricing integrity and account quality, Corona deserves serious consideration — and consistently appears on our shortlists for manufacturing, hospitality, and public sector procurement where budget certainty and supplier reliability are the primary criteria.
