About SSE Business Energy

SSE Business Energy (operating as SSE Energy Solutions) is a specialist commercial energy supplier serving businesses of all sizes across the UK. Part of SSE plc — a FTSE 100 multinational headquartered in Perth, Scotland — SSE Business Energy is a business-only supplier, having sold its domestic energy division, SSE Energy Services, to OVO Energy in January 2020.

Founded following the privatisation of Scotland’s electricity industry, SSE plc traces its heritage to the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board (established 1943) and the Southern Electricity Board (1948), which merged in 1998 to form Scottish and Southern Energy. The name was shortened to SSE in 2010. Today, SSE plc is one of the UK’s largest energy infrastructure companies, investing over £33 billion in homegrown energy generation and grid infrastructure.

SSE Business Energy serves approximately 500,000 businesses across the UK. Crucially, SSE is not just an energy supplier — it is also the UK’s largest renewable energy generator and a Distribution Network Operator (DNO) for Northern Scotland and Central Southern England. This means SSE both generates and distributes the electricity it supplies to business customers, giving it a level of vertical integration few competitors can match.

All SSE Business Energy tariffs include 100% renewable electricity as standard, sourced from SSE’s own generation assets including wind farms, hydroelectric plants, and solar projects across the UK and Ireland.

The SSE Business Energy Checklist

Security

Are their prices fully fixed?

It depends on the tariff chosen — SSE Business Energy offers two distinct approaches to price fixing for SMEs, which is more transparent than most suppliers.

SSE Protect fully fixes both commodity costs and all existing non-commodity costs (including network charges, levies, and industry costs) for up to four years. This is one of the most comprehensive fixed-price products available in the business energy market, offering genuine price certainty for the entire contract duration.

SSE Choice fixes wholesale commodity unit prices only for up to five years, whilst non-commodity costs remain variable — consistent with standard industry practice. This typically offers lower initial rates than Protect in exchange for accepting some cost variability.

For larger businesses, SSE also offers flexible tariffs including SSE Shaping, which fixes the consumption profile whilst allowing access to live market prices.

Charge Type SSE Protect SSE Choice
Commodity costs ✓ Fixed ✓ Fixed
Transportation (DUoS/TNUoS) ✓ Fixed ✗ Variable
Social and environmental charges ✓ Fixed ✗ Variable
FIT/RO/CFD ✓ Fixed ✗ Variable
VAT Excluded (standard) Excluded (standard)
CCL (Climate Change Levy) Excluded (standard) Excluded (standard)

The SSE Protect tariff’s inclusion of non-commodity costs is a genuine differentiator for businesses that require maximum budget certainty, such as those in hospitality, retail, and manufacturing with tight margin management requirements.

Back-billing policy

SSE Business Energy is an Energy UK member, meaning they adhere to the Back Billing Principle limiting retrospective billing to 12 months for meter reading corrections or estimated billing adjustments. However, Trustpilot reviews include documented instances of customers being billed beyond 12 months, with some successfully challenging this via Ofgem and the Dispute Resolution Ombudsman (formerly the Energy Ombudsman). Businesses should retain meter reading records and challenge any back-bill exceeding 12 months in writing.

Credit requirements

SSE Business Energy performs credit assessments for new business applicants. Depending on the outcome, SSE may require a security deposit, alternative payment terms, or prepayment arrangements. Businesses with limited trading history or adverse credit should discuss terms before signing.

Transparency

What is the termination process?

For non-microbusinesses: Written notice is required before your contract end date. The exact period is specified in your Contract Confirmation Letter. Cancellation within a minimum supply period will typically incur a financial penalty, as SSE contracts carry minimum supply periods of up to five years (depending on tariff). Businesses should check the notice requirements in their specific contract carefully.

For microbusinesses (fewer than 10 employees, turnover under £1.7m, consuming under 100,000 kWh electricity annually): No advance notice is required to end fixed-term contracts under the 2021 Ofgem microbusiness protections. Exception: evergreen or rollover tariffs require 30 days’ notice.

Termination submission: By phone (0345 725 2526), via the online account, or in writing to PO Box 7506, Perth, PH1 3QR.

Important warning: Trustpilot reviews include multiple documented cases of SSE blocking or delaying switching away from the supplier, including businesses having switch requests blocked at SSE’s end without explanation and subsequently being billed at out-of-contract rates. Businesses initiating a switch should monitor progress carefully and escalate promptly if the transfer is not completed within the expected timeframe.

What happens at contract end?

SSE sends renewal reminder notices ahead of contract expiry. If no new contract is agreed or a switch is not completed, businesses are moved to SSE’s out-of-contract variable rates — significantly higher than fixed-term tariffs. Out-of-contract rates from October 2025 are published on the SSE website and vary by meter type, location, and consumption profile.

Minimum supply periods of up to five years (Choice tariff) mean some businesses cannot switch until their contract term ends, making forward planning essential.

Is there a rollover period?

No automatic rollover into a new fixed term. Customers who do not renew or switch at contract end are placed on out-of-contract variable rates. These can change with notice and are typically 30–70% higher than comparable fixed-term rates.

What about early exit fees?

Early termination during a minimum supply period typically incurs a financial penalty, specified in your Contract Confirmation Letter. SSE’s minimum supply periods — up to five years for the Choice tariff — are longer than most competitors and represent a significant commitment. Businesses should calculate the full exit cost before signing, particularly on longer-term contracts.

Convenience

Payment options

  • Monthly Direct Debit (standard and preferred)
  • Quarterly billing
  • BACS bank transfer
  • Online account payment

Bills are typically issued quarterly unless otherwise arranged. The first bill will arrive within three months of contract start.

Online account management

SSE Business Energy provides an online account portal for invoice viewing, meter reading submission, usage monitoring, and account management. A carbon tracker tool is available, allowing businesses to monitor their carbon emissions and track usage against sustainability targets — a useful feature for businesses with net zero reporting obligations.

The online portal is generally functional for routine account management, though customer reviews indicate that complex queries requiring human support often cannot be resolved through digital channels alone.

Customer service standards

SSE Business Energy’s business helpline operates 9am–5pm, Monday to Friday (0345 725 2526). Live chat is available on the website during business hours. Accessibility services include Language Line for non-English speakers, Sign Video for BSL users, and materials available in Braille.

Service quality is a significant concern based on current customer evidence. Business-specific Trustpilot reviews consistently identify phone access as the primary issue — long wait times, calls going unanswered, and inability to escalate complex queries are recurring themes. Billing disputes and change-of-tenancy cases in particular appear difficult to resolve without protracted engagement.

SSE’s Trustpilot scores across its various profiles tell a consistent story: SSE Energy Solutions (the business brand page) scores approximately 1.6/5; the SSE plc corporate page scores around 1.3/5 based on ~4,000 reviews. It is worth noting that SSE’s uSwitch awards for customer service and smart meter experience (2021) are now some years old and predate the current pattern of customer complaints.

VAT declarations

Businesses qualifying for reduced VAT rates — including residential care homes, hospices, and certain charities — can submit VAT declarations to SSE Business Energy. CCL exemptions for qualifying organisations are also available with supporting documentation.

Services

Smart metres

SSE Business Energy offers smart metre installation for business customers, including three-phase SMETS2 metres for commercial properties — SSE was the first UK supplier to install a three-phase SMETS2 smart metre at a commercial property. Smart metres eliminate estimated billing, enable real-time consumption monitoring, and support the UK’s Market-wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) rollout. Installation is coordinated through SSE’s smart metre programme.

Smart metre reliability complaints appear in customer reviews, including instances of metres not communicating post-installation and the resulting estimated billing. Businesses should ensure smart metre performance is confirmed before contract completion.

Energy auditing and ESOS compliance

SSE Business Energy employs a nationwide energy audit team that assists businesses in identifying energy efficiency opportunities. For larger organisations, the team can provide ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) assessments — a legal compliance requirement for organisations with 250+ employees or £38.5 million+ turnover. This is a genuinely useful service for qualifying businesses that need a compliant assessment provider.

SSE Energy Solutions — wider services

Beyond energy supply, SSE Energy Solutions (the broader commercial brand encompassing SSE Business Energy) provides distributed energy services including on-site generation, battery storage, EV charging infrastructure, and energy efficiency projects. SSE works with businesses wanting to generate their own power, reduce grid dependency, and manage energy strategically. This positions SSE as a more comprehensive energy partner than a pure supply broker for businesses with complex or growing energy management requirements.

New connections

As a DNO for Northern Scotland and Central Southern England, SSE has direct responsibility for electricity distribution networks in these regions. This gives SSE Business Energy a unique advantage for new connections and capacity upgrades in these areas, often streamlining the process compared to suppliers without DNO relationships.

Multi-utility supply

SSE Business Energy has historically offered broadband and energy bundles. Current availability should be confirmed directly. Core supply covers electricity and gas only for standard business tariffs.

Environmental

SSE Business Energy has among the strongest and most authentic green credentials of any major UK business energy supplier.

Green electricity

SSE is the UK’s largest renewable energy generator, with significant assets including wind farms, hydroelectric plants, and solar energy projects across the UK and Ireland. All SSE Business Energy fixed-price tariffs include 100% renewable electricity as standard — sourced from SSE’s own UK generation assets and matched with REGO certificates.

SSE is also building the world’s largest offshore wind farm (Dogger Bank), investing over £33 billion in homegrown energy infrastructure. For businesses wanting to support genuine domestic renewable generation rather than certificate trading, SSE’s own-generation credentials are compelling.

Green gas

SSE Business Energy offers SSE Green Gas — a product providing 100% renewable gas — as an optional upgrade for businesses wanting to address their gas sustainability as well as electricity. This is supplied via biomethane injection into the gas grid and backed by appropriate certification.

Standard fuel mix disclosure:

Source SSE Business Energy UK Average
Renewable 100% 37.9%
Coal 0% 2.5%
Gas 0% 39.4%
Nuclear 0% 16.6%
Other 0% 3.6%

100% renewable electricity on all fixed-price tariffs, from SSE’s own UK generation assets.

Net zero commitment

SSE plc is committed to being operationally net zero by 2050 and has set four 2030 business goals aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The company is the largest accredited Living Wage Employer in the UK and has won recognition for responsible business practices alongside its renewable investment programme.

Sector Fit Assessment

Sector Suitability Notes

Telnergy’s Take

Our Professional Assessment

SSE Business Energy presents one of the sharpest contradictions in the UK commercial energy market: genuinely outstanding infrastructure credentials and renewable generation capability, paired with a customer service reality that falls well short of what a FTSE 100 supplier should deliver.

What we like:

UK’s largest renewable generator — authentically: SSE doesn’t just purchase certificates to claim renewable electricity. It generates power from its own wind farms, hydroelectric plants, and solar assets, and is building the world’s largest offshore wind farm at Dogger Bank. When SSE says 100% renewable electricity, it is drawing on over 80 years of generation heritage. For businesses with meaningful sustainability commitments, this provenance matters.

SSE Protect is market-leading on price certainty: The all-inclusive fully fixed tariff — covering commodity costs and all non-commodity charges including network and levy pass-throughs — is genuinely rare. Most suppliers fix the commodity element only and leave businesses exposed to network charge variability (which can represent 40–50% of the total electricity bill). SSE Protect removes this uncertainty for the contract term, making it particularly valuable for businesses with tight budgeting requirements.

DNO status brings real advantages: In Northern Scotland and Central Southern England, SSE is both the supplier and distribution network operator. This integration can streamline new connections, capacity upgrades, and smart metre rollout in these regions — a practical advantage competitors cannot replicate.

ESOS compliance and energy auditing: The nationwide energy audit team and ESOS assessment capability is a useful added-value service for larger businesses with compliance obligations. Few suppliers at this level offer in-house ESOS assessment alongside energy supply.

Green Gas availability: The SSE Green Gas optional upgrade addresses the gas side of a business’s sustainability equation — something ScottishPower and several other nominally green suppliers do not offer.

Watch points:

Trustpilot evidence on service is difficult to dismiss: Business-specific reviews on SSE’s Trustpilot profiles consistently identify the same issues: phone lines that are effectively inaccessible for long periods, billing disputes that remain unresolved for months, change-of-tenancy cases that descend into debt collection errors, and — most seriously — documented cases of SSE blocking legitimate switch-away requests whilst continuing to bill at out-of-contract rates. These are not edge cases; they represent a recurring pattern across recent reviews.

Minimum supply periods up to five years are long: SSE Choice contracts can lock businesses in for up to five years, with early exit penalties. Whilst this reflects the longer-term pricing SSE offers, it is a significant commitment in a market where circumstances change. Businesses should be fully aware of the minimum supply period before signing.

uSwitch awards are historic: The 2021 uSwitch awards for customer service and smart meter experience appear frequently in SSE’s own marketing and in broker descriptions. These were awarded in a different operating environment and predate the current pattern of customer complaints. Businesses should weight current customer evidence more heavily.

Phone support hours are narrow: 9am–5pm, Monday to Friday is one of the narrower support windows of any major supplier. Businesses operating outside these hours — including hospitality and retail — may find urgent account queries difficult to progress quickly.

Bottom line:

SSE Business Energy’s strongest case is made for businesses where the SSE Protect all-inclusive fixed tariff is the deciding factor, where ESOS compliance support is needed, or where DNO integration in Northern Scotland or Central Southern England provides practical advantages. The 100% renewable generation credentials are authentic and backed by over £33 billion of ongoing UK infrastructure investment.

However, the current customer service evidence is genuinely concerning for any business considering a two-, three-, or five-year contract. A supplier that is difficult to reach, slow to resolve disputes, and — in documented cases — resistant to facilitating a legitimate switch away represents a meaningful operational risk. We would advise any business considering SSE to factor this risk carefully into their decision, and to ensure their broker actively monitors contract performance throughout the term.

We regularly include SSE on comparison quotes and their rates are competitive, particularly on the Protect product. The value-for-money case can be strong. But the right supplier for any business must balance competitive pricing against the realistic likelihood of needing account support — and on that measure, SSE’s current track record requires honest scrutiny.
