Valda Energy — Supplier Profile

Electricity pylon in a UK field in warm natural light.

About Valda Energy

Valda Energy is a British-owned, independent business energy supplier that began trading in April 2019. Headquartered in Oxfordshire, Valda is a subsidiary of Axpo UK — the UK arm of Axpo Group, the Swiss energy company and one of Europe’s largest producers of renewable energy. The Axpo backing gives Valda financial stability that belies its relatively young age in the UK market.

Valda’s proposition is deliberately narrow and focused: it supplies only SMEs, with no domestic offering and no pursuit of large industrial or corporate accounts. This singular focus on the SME market has shaped every aspect of the business — its tariff structure, its customer portal, its UK-based call centre, and its pricing approach. Since 2019 it has grown rapidly, reaching over 45,000 SME customers across the UK in sectors including health and beauty, retail, automotive, and leisure.

CEO Steve James, who joined at the company’s founding, has emphasised a culture of operational simplicity and accurate billing — two things that SME customers consistently cite as pain points with larger suppliers. Valda’s leadership team collectively has decades of experience in the UK energy sector, with several having been involved in the market since its deregulation in 1997.

What to Expect as a Business Customer

Security — Fixed Pricing

Valda’s core tariff is SmartChoice — a fixed commodity tariff available for 1, 2, or 3-year terms. Non-commodity costs are passed through at actual cost. SmartChoice is available for businesses spending up to approximately £12,000 per year on energy; above that threshold, businesses should call 0330 124 2023 for a tailored quote.

SmartChoice Zero is a no-standing-charge variant of the SmartChoice tariff — the standing charge is absorbed into the unit rate, meaning businesses only pay for energy they actually consume. This is particularly useful for seasonal businesses, low-consumption operations, or businesses that are closed for extended periods.

Valda Renewable provides 100% renewable electricity sourced from wind, solar, and hydropower from independent UK producers. Valda has Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with independent renewable generators and plants two trees in partnership with Stump Up for Trees for each customer who signs a renewable tariff.

SmartChoice Prepay: For businesses that prefer or need to pay as they go, Valda offers a prepayment option with smart metering, allowing real-time tracking of credit balances and consumption.

Variable tariff: A standard variable tariff is available for businesses that want flexibility rather than a fixed term.

No cooling-off period: Business energy contracts have no cooling-off period once signed. Cancellation before contract end will typically attract cancellation fees.

Back-billing: Covered by Ofgem’s 12-month rule for micro-business customers.

Transparency — Contract End Process

Valda does not auto-roll into a new fixed term at contract end. If no new contract is agreed, the account moves to the standard variable tariff (deemed rates apply if the account lapses without agreement). Out-of-contract deemed rates are significantly higher than fixed contract rates — active renewal management is essential.

Unlike some larger suppliers, Valda proactively contacts customers ahead of contract expiry to discuss renewal options — several Trustpilot reviews specifically name account managers who called in advance to calculate tariff options.

Convenience — Payments and Account Management

  • Customer portal: Available online and via mobile app (iOS and Android) — 24/7 access to invoices, usage data, payments, and account management
  • Two-step verification: Security-hardened portal login
  • Payment methods: Direct debit, bank transfer, card payment — multiple options unlike some suppliers that mandate direct debit only
  • Smart meters: Free installation; enables real-time usage tracking and accurate (not estimated) billing
  • Customer service: UK-based call centre; live chat available during business hours; no published email address (use contact form on website)
  • VAT: 5% for qualifying micro-businesses, 20% standard rate otherwise

Services

  • Dual fuel: Gas and electricity available from Valda
  • Smart metering: Free installation with 24/7 usage data via portal and app
  • Energy efficiency support: Valda offers resources and tools to help businesses reduce consumption
  • Prepayment metering: Via SmartChoice Prepay — unusual among SME suppliers and useful for businesses with poor credit history or variable cash flow

Environmental

  • Valda Renewable tariff: 100% renewable electricity from UK wind, solar, and hydro independent producers — not purchased through unbundled REGOs but through direct PPAs with UK generators
  • Tree planting: Stump Up for Trees partnership — 2 trees planted per renewable tariff customer per year; Valda employees volunteered to plant 130 trees in the Brecon Beacons
  • Fuel mix (standard): Includes a proportion of renewables sourced from UK independent generators; not independently audited to the same standard as Good Energy or Ecotricity

Sector Fit Assessment

Sector Fit Notes
Hospitality ★★★★★ SmartChoice Zero (no standing charge) is ideal for seasonal businesses; prepay option suits venues with variable trading
Manufacturing ★★★☆☆ Works for smaller manufacturing operations; larger plants will need a tailored quote and may exceed Valda’s SME focus
Retail ★★★★☆ Simple tariff structure, accurate billing, and app-based account management suit busy retail operators
Health & beauty ★★★★★ Specifically cited as a core Valda sector; salon and clinic operators benefit from simple fixed pricing
Automotive ★★★★☆ One of Valda’s core sectors; competitive pricing for garages and dealerships
Professional services ★★★☆☆ Adequate; limited premium service features compared to business-only specialists with dedicated account managers
Education ★★★☆☆ Suitable for smaller sites; framework procurement may offer better value for larger establishments
SMEs (general) ★★★★★ Purpose-built for this market; 45,000+ SME customers validates the proposition

Telnergy’s Take

What we like:

  • The only major UK supplier focused exclusively on SMEs — no distraction from domestic or large I&C markets
  • SmartChoice Zero (no standing charge) is genuinely useful for seasonal businesses and often overlooked in the market
  • Free smart metering plus a well-reviewed portal and app make account management genuinely self-service
  • Multiple payment options (not just direct debit) provide flexibility that cash-flow-sensitive SMEs appreciate
  • Axpo Group parent backing provides financial stability beyond what a young independent supplier would typically carry
  • Proactive renewal contact — customers report being called in advance by named account managers
  • 45,000+ SME customers and growing — demonstrably succeeding in its chosen market

Watch points:

  • Trustpilot score (~4.1/5) reflects genuine polarisation: 64% 5-star but a meaningful proportion of 1-star reviews citing billing disputes and contract exit difficulties — both are patterns worth noting
  • Limited tariff range — SmartChoice is effectively the only product; businesses needing sophisticated pass-through pricing, flexible products, or I&C structures will find Valda too simple
  • No published email address — support is via phone or web form only, which some businesses find inconvenient
  • Deemed/out-of-contract rates are expensive (as with all suppliers) — Valda’s simplicity does not protect you if you fall off contract
  • Smart meter appointment reliability is highlighted in some negative reviews — contractors occasionally arrive at wrong times or without correct equipment

Is Valda Right For You?

Consider Valda if:

  • You run an SME and want a supplier that is focused on businesses your size, not large corporates
  • Your business is seasonal and you want to avoid standing charges during quiet periods (SmartChoice Zero)
  • You want accurate billing through smart metering and self-service account management via a well-designed portal and app
  • You need flexibility on payment method and don’t want to be locked into direct debit only
  • You have variable credit or prefer to pay as you go (SmartChoice Prepay)

Consider alternatives if:

  • You have high energy consumption and need bespoke I&C pricing (look at SEFE, TotalEnergies, or npower Business Solutions)
  • You need a fully fixed tariff including all non-commodity costs (SSE Business Protect is the market benchmark)
  • Your sustainability credentials require independently verified renewable provenance beyond simple PPA claims (consider Good Energy or Ecotricity)
  • You need a gas-only contract — Valda’s gas offering is less prominent than its electricity proposition
