About OVO Energy

OVO Energy is one of the UK’s largest domestic energy suppliers, headquartered in Bristol and founded in 2009 by Stephen Fitzpatrick with a mission to make energy “cheaper, greener, and simpler.” From its origins as a small independent challenger brand operating out of a Cotswolds barn, OVO has grown into a major force in the UK energy market — significantly accelerated by its £500 million acquisition of SSE Energy Services (SSE’s retail business) in January 2020, which added approximately 3.5 million domestic customers overnight.

As of mid-2025, OVO Energy supplied around 12.2% of the UK’s electricity customers and 10.4% of gas customers — firmly establishing it within the current “Big Six” domestic supplier group alongside British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON Next, Octopus Energy, and Scottish Power.

However, there is a critical distinction for business customers: OVO Energy is now a domestic-only supplier.

OVO transferred its commercial electricity customer base to Clear Business — a dedicated business energy specialist. This means OVO Energy no longer actively supplies new business energy contracts to SMEs or commercial customers. Businesses previously on OVO supply have been migrated to Clear Business, which operates as an independent business energy broker and supplier.

This is not widely publicised and causes confusion for businesses that encounter OVO in comparison searches. If you are a business looking for a commercial energy contract, OVO Energy is not currently the appropriate route — and this guide will help you understand the landscape and identify the right alternatives.

OVO Energy and Business Customers — What You Need to Know

The Business Energy Exit

OVO Energy’s commercial electricity customer base was acquired by Clear Business, a business energy specialist. This transfer reflects OVO’s strategic decision to focus exclusively on the domestic energy market, where it competes primarily on green credentials, digital innovation, EV charging tariffs, and customer rewards.

If your business is currently or was previously supplied by OVO Energy, your contract will have been, or is being, migrated to Clear Business. You should have received written notification of this transfer. If you have not, contact Clear Business directly to confirm your supply arrangements.

Potential OVO/ScottishPower Merger

In June 2025, reports emerged that OVO Energy and Iberdrola (the Spanish utility that owns ScottishPower) were in exploratory merger talks. If completed, this would be a significant structural event in the UK energy market. At the time of writing (March 2026), no deal has been confirmed. Businesses with domestic premises under OVO supply should monitor this situation as it could affect future tariff options and the OVO brand’s long-term trajectory.

The OVO Energy Checklist

Note: The following section covers OVO Energy’s domestic supply terms, which are the only contracts OVO currently offers. Business customers should use this section to understand OVO’s domestic offering only — not as guidance for commercial procurement.

Security (Domestic Tariffs)

Are their prices fixed?

OVO Energy offers both fixed-rate and variable-rate domestic tariffs:

Fixed tariffs (1-year and 2-year options) lock unit rates and standing charges for the contract term, providing protection against price cap increases. Early exit fees apply: £75 per fuel for a 1-year contract and £95 per fuel for a 2-year contract.

Simpler Energy is OVO’s standard variable tariff. Prices track the Ofgem energy price cap, reviewed quarterly. No exit fees.

OVO is not subject to the business energy back-billing provisions — domestic customers have separate protections under the domestic supply regulations.

Green electricity

OVO Energy committed in 2023 to backing its 100% renewable electricity claims with power purchase agreements (PPAs) rather than REGO certificates alone, which OVO characterises as a more substantive green commitment. OVO was also the first UK supplier to remove coal and nuclear from its energy mix (2015). The OVO Foundation supports climate action and education programmes.

Transparency

OVO Energy provides switching protections as a signatory to the Energy Switch Guarantee, with most switches completed within five working days. Domestic customers can leave fixed tariffs subject to exit fees; variable tariff customers can switch at any time without penalty.

Convenience (Domestic)

OVO Energy’s domestic customer service is available by phone (0330 303 5063, Mon–Fri 9am–5pm, Sat 9am–5pm) and via live chat through the online account. The online account and OVO app are well-regarded for ease of use and consumption monitoring.

OVO’s Trustpilot score of 4.5–4.6/5 from over 263,000 reviews reflects strong domestic customer satisfaction, particularly for smart metre installation and adviser helpfulness. However, Which? 2025 rated OVO below average and not a recommended provider — a notable divergence from Trustpilot scores that suggests the experience is more mixed in practice than the headline rating implies.

Citizens Advice placed OVO 4th out of 16 energy suppliers for the January–March 2025 period, giving a more nuanced picture.

Environmental

OVO Energy’s environmental profile is among the stronger of the domestic Big Six:

  • 100% renewable electricity backed by PPAs (power purchase agreements), not just REGO certificates
  • First UK supplier to exclude coal and nuclear from energy mix (2015)
  • Plan Zero sustainability target: net zero carbon by 2035
  • 5 million trees planted in schools and communities on behalf of customers
  • OVO Foundation supporting climate action and education
  • OVO Beyond rewards programme: offers solar panel discounts, EV mile credits, and tree planting rewards for customers

OVO’s carbon-neutral gas claims use offsetting. Businesses with formal net zero reporting requirements should verify the methodology behind any carbon claims before relying on them for ESG disclosure purposes.

Sector Fit Assessment

OVO Energy does not currently supply new business customers. The sector fit assessment below applies to domestic or mixed-use properties where the account holder is assessed under domestic supply terms.

Sector Relevance Notes
Business energy procurement ✗ Not applicable OVO has transferred commercial accounts to Clear Business. SMEs should not approach OVO for business energy contracts.
Domestic premises for business owners ⭐⭐⭐ Moderate OVO’s domestic tariffs, EV charging options, and renewable credentials are relevant for business owners managing their home energy. Competitive but not always cheapest vs Octopus.
Mixed-use properties ⚠️ Clarify supply type If a property has both domestic and business supply points, each will be treated separately. Business MPANs/MPRNs will be managed by Clear Business; domestic will remain with OVO.

Telnergy’s Take

Our Professional Assessment

OVO Energy occupies a peculiar position in any guide to business energy suppliers: it is, strictly speaking, no longer one. The transfer of OVO’s commercial electricity customer base to Clear Business is the defining fact for any business approaching this supplier, and it is a fact that much of the comparison market has been slow to update.

We include this profile specifically to prevent businesses from wasting time pursuing OVO Energy for commercial energy procurement, and to clarify the landscape for anyone who was previously with OVO on a business account and wants to understand their current situation.

What we like (domestic context):

OVO’s domestic credentials are genuinely strong. The PPA-backed renewable electricity commitment (abandoning pure REGO reliance in 2023) represents a more substantive green claim than many competitors. The OVO app and online account management are among the most polished in the market. And at 4.5–4.6/5 from over 263,000 Trustpilot reviewers, the satisfaction data for domestic customers is broadly positive — though the divergence with Which?’s below-average rating is worth noting and suggests pockets of genuine service difficulty that the headline score doesn’t fully capture.

For business owners managing their domestic energy alongside their commercial operations, OVO’s EV tariffs (including Charge Anytime for EV home charging) and solar panel packages may be relevant considerations separate to the business energy question.

Watch points:

OVO no longer actively supplies new business energy contracts. This is the central fact. Businesses that encounter OVO in comparison searches or broker conversations should clarify immediately whether they are being quoted on domestic or business terms, and whether the supply entity is OVO or Clear Business.

Which? rated OVO below average in 2025. Despite a strong Trustpilot score, OVO’s performance on customer service in independent Which? testing was below the market average. The pattern of Ofgem enforcement actions — including £8.9m into the voluntary redress fund in 2020, and £2.8m in redress for overcharging in 2021, plus a 2023 finding of overcharging under the Energy Price Guarantee — suggests a supplier that has historically struggled to keep customer management quality in pace with rapid growth.

The potential merger with ScottishPower (Iberdrola) adds uncertainty to OVO’s medium-term trajectory. Businesses with domestic premises on OVO supply should monitor developments and consider whether a two-year fixed domestic tariff commitment is prudent given the potential for structural change.

Bottom line:

For business energy, OVO is not currently the right conversation. If you were previously an OVO business customer, your account is now with Clear Business — and it is worth reviewing those terms to ensure you are on competitive rates.

For domestic energy, OVO is a credible option with strong green credentials and good digital tools, though not always the cheapest and with some service quality inconsistency in independent assessments.
