What Is an MPRN? Your Gas Meter Point Reference Explained

Your MPRN Is the Unique Reference for Your Gas Supply Point. Every Gas Account, Contract, and Supplier Switch Requires It.
Every gas supply point connected to the UK gas network has a unique identifier called an MPRN — Meter Point Reference Number. It’s the gas equivalent of the electricity MPAN: a reference number that identifies not the customer or the meter, but the specific supply point itself in the national gas network database.
If you’ve ever arranged a business gas contract, switched gas supplier, or dealt with a billing query, you’ll have encountered the MPRN — even if you didn’t know the term at the time. It’s a standard piece of administrative information that sits behind every gas supply transaction in the UK.
What an MPRN Identifies
The MPRN identifies a specific gas supply point — the point in the gas distribution network where your premises receives its gas supply. Like the electricity MPAN, it identifies the supply point rather than the customer account or the meter. When you switch gas supplier, your MPRN stays the same. When the meter is replaced, the MPRN stays the same. The reference travels with the supply point, not with the commercial relationship.
The MPRN is managed through Xoserve, the central data service provider for the UK gas market. Xoserve maintains the national database of all gas supply points in Great Britain, including current supplier, meter details, and consumption history. When your gas supplier accesses information about your supply — to process a switch, resolve a billing query, or update contract terms — they are drawing on Xoserve’s database, indexed by your MPRN.
What an MPRN Looks Like
An MPRN is a number between 6 and 10 digits long. Unlike the electricity MPAN, which has a fixed 13-digit core structure, MPRNs vary in length depending on when and how the supply point was registered in the network database.
Common MPRN formats you may encounter:
- 6-digit MPRNs: older supply points registered under legacy network systems
- 8-digit MPRNs: the most common format for standard commercial gas supply points
- 10-digit MPRNs: some more recently registered or larger industrial supply points
The MPRN appears on gas bills and supply documentation without the complex top-line structure that accompanies electricity MPANs. It is simply presented as a number, typically labelled “Gas Supply Number,” “MPRN,” or “Meter Point Reference Number.”
Where to Find Your MPRN
Your MPRN appears in the following places:
- Your gas bill: Usually in the supply details or account information section. Look for a number labelled “Gas Supply Number,” “MPRN,” or “Meter Reference.” It is a 6–10 digit number.
- Your gas contract: Any contract document from a gas supplier should include the MPRN for the supply point being contracted.
- Your gas meter: The MPRN is sometimes printed on a card or label attached to the meter installation. Not all meter installations display the MPRN, but it is worth checking.
- Via your gas supplier: Your current gas supplier can provide the MPRN for any supply point on your account. Have your account number ready.
If you are taking on new premises and don’t have access to previous bills, a commercial energy broker can locate the MPRN using Xoserve’s Find My Supplier service, which is accessible to market participants and approved brokers.
Why Your MPRN Matters for Business Gas Management
Supplier switching: A new gas supplier requires your MPRN to register the contract and initiate the transfer of your supply point from the incumbent supplier. Without it, no supplier switch can proceed.
Change of tenancy: When your business moves into new premises, the first step in establishing gas supply is obtaining the MPRN for those premises. This identifies the existing gas supply, the current supplier, and allows you to notify the supplier of the change of occupier and arrange a new contract. Without the MPRN, you are dealing with an anonymous supply point on an unknown supplier’s books — a position that leads directly to deemed contract rates.
Contract administration: Every correspondence with your gas supplier — billing queries, meter change requests, contract amendments — should reference the MPRN. It is the primary identifier that links your account to the physical supply point.
Multi-site gas management: For businesses with multiple gas supply points — different premises, or a site with separate gas meters for different processes — each supply point has its own MPRN. Maintaining a record of each MPRN, aligned with the corresponding site address and contract details, is essential for accurate portfolio management.
Gas Shipper vs Gas Supplier: A Related Distinction
The gas industry uses two related but distinct terms that are worth clarifying in the context of the MPRN:
Gas transporter: The network company responsible for the physical gas distribution infrastructure in your area — the pipes that carry gas to your premises. There are four main gas transporters in the UK: Cadent Gas, Northern Gas Networks, SGN, and Wales & West Utilities. You cannot choose your gas transporter — it is determined by your location.
Gas supplier: The commercial entity that contracts with you for the sale of gas and that is responsible for your billing. You can choose your gas supplier competitively through the market. Your MPRN is registered against a specific gas supplier in the Xoserve database at any given time.
When you switch gas supplier, what changes is the commercial relationship registered against your MPRN in the Xoserve database — not the physical infrastructure. The gas continues to flow through the same pipes; only the billing relationship changes.
MPRN vs MPAN: A Quick Reference
- MPRN = Gas supply point identifier. 6–10 digits. Managed through Xoserve.
- MPAN = Electricity supply point identifier. 13-digit core number plus top line. Managed through MPAS/DNOs.
Both are supply point identifiers. Both remain constant when you switch supplier or replace the meter. Both are required for any contract or account change.
Telnergy and MPRN Management
We record and maintain the MPRN for every gas supply point in every client’s portfolio. For clients with dual-fuel or multi-site accounts, we manage both the MPAN and MPRN registers, ensuring every account change and supplier communication uses the correct identifiers.
